My Breast Cancer Story !!!
I had a right-breast mastectomy and a tissue expander inserted on Nov. 11, 2007 at Thornton Hospital in La Jolla, CA. The breast cancer treatment went very well. Although I was scared, I had done so much to prepare myself (I’ll write another post re: surgery prep suggestions) that I didn’t feel overwhelmed and was able to meditate a little before they took me in for surgery. Also, it helped that my Mom, Dad, sister and boyfriend were all there with me. It made a huge difference, I can’t imagine having gone through all of this without them.
I stayed overnight at the hospital, my boyfriend stayed there with me (he slept in the window seat) and they monitored me for post-surgical complications. I had a bit of a fever and didn’t feel good, had some post-surgical nausea. The thought of throwing up right after surgery was very frightening but fortunately it didn’t happen. I was in a fair amount of pain and was pretty limited in my mobility, especially being able to sit up by myself or turning over (pretty much couldn’t do those things for over a week). Aside from one nurse who gave me a morphine shot too fast (OMG the pain!!!), I was well taken care of and managed to sleep on and off. In the morning, they gave me a few exercises to do, a prescription for pain meds and sent me on my way. In retrospect, I probably should have stayed another day. Being at home with a drain coming out of my chest was quite an experience. My Mom and my sister were my main caretakers for a week after my surgery and it was daunting for all of us. Not to mention strange and painful and scary. Thank goodness no major problems came up and I healed quite well.
I read this article on types of breast cancer surgery and was very useful , do check it out by clicking the below link :
